Self-Care That Actually Fits Mom Life
Before becoming a mom, I didn’t fully understand just how much life runs on a schedule. Bottle feedings, nap time, toddler activities, meals—you name it. Everything shifts when you have a family.
And somewhere in all of that, it can be really easy to put yourself last.
That’s why carving out even small moments of self-care matters. Even 10 minutes can make a difference.
So what are some ways to refill your cup while keeping everything else running? Here are a few of my favorite ways to unwind and take care of myself—some you can even do with your kids alongside you.
Gardening
I’ve always enjoyed gardening, but it’s become even more meaningful since having my daughter. There’s something really grounding about it, and I love including her in the process. Now that she’s a bit older, she helps water the plants (her favorite job!).
Living in North Carolina, we’re lucky to have a long growing season. I started a small garden of greens—spinach, lettuce, and peas—back in early March, and my herb garden is coming along nicely. And I have loved seeing my peppermint plants “wake up” just before spring. One of my favorite simple pleasures is a cup of peppermint tea made from my garden, with a little honey from my neighbor who is a beekeeper.
I’m already looking forward to warmer weather so I can add in some tropical plants—think mandevillas, palms, and hibiscus.
Skincare
I love a good skincare routine—it’s one of the easiest ways for me to unwind at the end of the day. I try to have at least one face mask night each week, and I use my red-light therapy mask as many nights as I can! It’s definitely my holy grail.
I also enjoy using a gua sha or jade roller (and yes, my daughter has her own—because of course she does). And while a skincare fridge isn’t a necessity, it’s a fun little upgrade that makes those few minutes feel extra refreshing, especially on less sleep.
Crocheting or Knitting
I’m definitely not an expert, but I go through phases where I love crocheting. I’ll do it every night for a few weeks… and then not touch it again for months.
But when I’m in that phase, it’s incredibly relaxing, and it feels good to create something meaningful. Right now, I’m working on a blanket for my daughter for when she moves into her big girl bed.
DIY Manis and Pedis
One thing that naturally fell off after having a baby was going out for manicures and pedicures. Between the time and cost, it just stopped feeling worth it.
So I started doing my own at home, and honestly, I don’t miss the salon. I began with a simple starter kit (I use Kiara Sky and found it really easy to learn), and I love that I can break it up into smaller chunks—remove dip one night, redo them the next.
Same with pedicures—quick buff during nap time, polish after bedtime, done. My go-to polishes lately have been Londontown—the colors are really forgiving, which helps because perfection is definitely not the goal here.
Date Nights
These matter—so much. Whether it’s once a month or whatever rhythm works for you, making time to connect with your significant other (or even your bestie!) is important.
And if getting out of the house feels like too much, an at-home date night totally counts. Order takeout, open a bottle of wine, watch something you both enjoy—simple works. Even daytime outings with the kids can feel special with a little intention.
Cooking
Cooking has become one of my favorite ways to slow down and be present. Some days it’s just getting dinner on the table, and other days I enjoy trying a new recipe or making something a little more fun.
It’s also a great way to involve kids—whether they’re “helping” stir, taste-testing, or just keeping you company in the kitchen. It doesn’t have to be complicated to feel enjoyable.
Movement and Sunshine
Getting outside and moving your body can make such a difference for your mood and energy.
For me, I stay most consistent when I go to a structured class. I’ve really enjoyed Fit4Mom (hey Hillsborough— a new Fit4Mom is coming soon!). It’s such a great way to move your body while also connecting with other moms.
I am also a big fan of Pure Barre and Stretch and Sip Yoga at Eno River Brewing (you can even take a scenic walk along the river after yoga!).
I love being outside, so family walks, park trips, or even just playing in the yard all count. And honestly, having a toddler pretty much guarantees you’re getting extra steps in every day.
I hope this gave you a few ideas or a little inspiration to prioritize yourself, even in small ways. Taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s something that helps you show up better for everything and everyone else.
